FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is club volleyball?
Club volleyball is an opportunity for players of varying abilities to develop their skills through training and competition. It is a select sport where you must attend a scheduled tryout and be chosen for a team based upon skill, athletic level, and potential.

- We are an elite volleyball program not only because top teams win tournaments, but also we offer great training to kids of ALL levels. That's who we are. Texas Legends Volleyball. We have teams for all levels of athletes, including players just beginning to the experienced athlete wishing to pursue a collegiate career.
- Texas Legends Volleyball is a junior volleyball club sanctioned through USA Volleyball and through the Lone Star Region.
What age groups does Texas Legends offer?
- We offer teams for athletes from ages 9 to 18.
- Volleyball has become increasingly competitive and players are starting at an earlier age. Players generally begin around the age of 10-12, but we have had success with players as young as 9 on competitive teams.
Can multi-sport athletes tryout for Texas Legends?
Yes, we have many athletes that play multiple sports, especially in the younger age groups. We believe it is a great value to the development of the athlete to cross-train through other sports and become a better all-around athlete. It is your responsibility to communicate any conflicts with your coach. We suggest a two-day notice for all missed practices and a two-week notice for any missed tournament.
Are teams pre-selected prior to Tryouts?
No. All players have an equal opportunity at tryouts and all players must tryout, including returning players. Athletes develop at different rates. Some players advance during the previous season more than others and also the committed players work hard in the off-season to improve their skills. We obviously know the skill level of our returning players better, so if you are new to Texas Legends, we encourage you to attend our various Training Opportunities so that we can get to know you.
How many players will be on each team?
Most teams will have 9-12 players.
How often do the teams practice?
- Teams will practice twice a week, generally. (Subject to change)
- If your team is scheduled to practice on a weekend day, but has a tournament that same weekend, generally the team will not practice. Tournaments can oftentimes last 8-10 hours a day. To prevent burnout and to allow recovery times, it is a general rule that we do not practice on weekends we have a tournament. However, this is at the coach's discretion.
- We take time off for Christmas Break and Spring Break so that players can enjoy time with their families. We follow the school schedule for each area, so if you are from Waco playing in Belton and vice versa, please take notice and ask your coach. For most teams, we try to avoid playing on Easter weekend as well. However, that is not always possible for some of the National and State teams.
How long does the season last?
Our season begins the last week of November, at the conclusion of the UIL High School Volleyball State Tournament. The end of the season generally concludes at the end of April or the beginning of May, depending on tournament schedule. For National and State teams that may advance to Nationals, the season would conclude at the end of June.
Do you guarantee playing time?
- Your club fees go toward practice time and instruction by qualified coaches, NOT playing time in tournaments. We will guarantee a "fair" amount of playing time for every player, not an "equal" amount. When assessing the amount of playing time, make sure that the comparison is being made among players that play the same position. For example, there may be only two middle hitters on a team and three outside hitters. One outside hitter must sit out, since only two outside hitters are in the game at a time. Yet the two middle hitters play all the time.
- More playing time is earned by being at practice and working hard to improve, as well as, executing the skills when given the opportunity to play. Coaches are advised to give everyone an opportunity to contribute their individual skills and abilities to the team during pool play matches. Those skills and abilities may include being a hitter in the front row, serving and playing defense in the back row, or playing "all the way around". When teams advance past pool play, this is the time to reward those players that have excelled when given opportunities earlier in the day. Amount of playing time for all players is at the coach's discretion and may not be equal for all players.
How do I handle conflict should it arise?
Throughout the season, a conflict may occur. If you have an issue, the first step is for you to encourage your child to communicate with their coach. If this does not resolve the issue, the 2nd step is for a meeting with the coach, player, and parent. The final step is to set up a meeting with the club director, coach, player, and parent. There will not be any meetings without the player present. There will not be any meeting with the club director until step one and step two has occurred. Meetings and conferences should be scheduled, and not handled immediately after or during a tournament or practice where emotions could run high.
How much are your fees for the 2022/23 season?
- The fees cover the cost of gym rental, equipment, tournament entry fees, uniforms, coaches' salaries, and administrative fees. All TLVC players will have access to a full-time college recruiting director. Fees do not include: USAV or AAU registration, airfare, hotels, food, any ground transportation to and from practice sessions and out-of-town tournaments, shopping, etc.
- Keep in mind that you are signing a contract for a predetermined fee and that payment plans are a courtesy. Contracts are due regardless if the player completes the season. It does not work like a dance class or gymnastics class where you pay for the months that you attend.
